How to Know When You Need a Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction simply refers to the removal of a tooth. The extraction depends on the shape of the tooth, its size, location, and position in the mouth. Dentists usually perform simple extractions on visible teeth, especially those that come out as a single piece. However, the dentist will need to perform surgical extractions if there is a need to access the gum or bone. This type of removal usually happens in pieces.

The dentist may prescribe an extraction for different reasons, and some of these include:

Damage to Teeth

Trauma and tooth decay are some of the leading causes of damage to teeth. If you experience any type of trauma on a tooth and it becomes loose or falls out on its own, visit the dentist. This may also be a sign of damage in the surrounding area.

Bacteria called plaque feed on the food particles that remain on the teeth and cause decay. They erode and break through the enamel and continue into the pulp. At this point, an individual is said to have cavities. Cavities often lead to infections that will require the extraction of the tooth if other methods of saving the tooth are no longer possible. If you see discoloration of your tooth enamel, black marks on your filling, swollen or red gums, it may be time for an extraction.

When Undergoing Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontia refers to the procedure of preventing, diagnosing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws and improving bite patterns. The treatment for this includes using braces. An extraction is applicable if the spacers cannot make room for oral gap bands because of misalignment or crowding of the teeth. As you discuss with your orthodontist about the procedure, they will advise you on whether extraction is necessary or not.

Infection or Gum Disease

Swollen or red gums that are bleeding and painful may indicate disease or infection. Look out for bad breath, how your teeth align when you bite, and loose teeth. Antibiotics are the first course of treatment for infections, followed by root canal procedures. If the two options will not make much difference, then tooth removal is inevitable.

Compromised Immune System

Patients undergoing organ transplant procedures or chemotherapy usually develop compromised immune systems. This means that the risk of getting an infection may be high. For this reason, the removal of teeth showing signs of decay, damage, or infection is a good move. The removal is to ensure that the mouth remains healthy and does not become a source of infection.

Compromised Wisdom Teeth

The most common extractions are those of wisdom teeth. Sometimes when wisdom teeth are growing, they crowd nearby teeth, partially emerge, or may remain trapped under the gum. This may require extraction of a nearby tooth or surgical extraction of the wisdom tooth. This is to stop the weakening of the bone that supports your teeth or the formation of cysts due to infection.
